NOVA: Hidden Volcano Abyss

Experience one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history

  • Christina Zeiders

In January 2022, one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history rocked the South Pacific islands of Tonga, sending shockwaves around the world.

NOVA: Hidden Volcano Abyss lets viewers experience the terrifying power of the eruption and the devastating tsunami that struck the shores of Tonga through first-person accounts.

Watch Hidden Volcano Abyss on WITF TV on May 10 at 9pm, or stream it for free using the PBS or WITF app.

The eruption could be heard nearly 6,000 miles away in Alaska and, from space, scientists could see huge clouds of ash and an atmospheric shockwave that radiated from the eruption site at nearly the speed of sound.

NOVA asks the question: Why was this eruption so big? How did it cause the tsunami? And could another disaster loom?

Watch Hidden Volcano Abyss on WITF TV on Wednesday, May 10 at 9pm, or stream it on-demand using the free PBS or WITF app.
