Hispanic Heritage Month

WITF Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with the following programs scheduled to honor contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. The following is a list of television programs scheduled:

Tuesday September 15 at 10:00pm Building the American Dream – Travel to Texas, where immigrant construction workers are seeking justice and equality in an industry rife with exploitation. Across the state, there’s an unprecedented building boom, fueled by Latino laborers with little or no rights. Available on-demand on our website and through the PBS Video app.

Friday September 18 at 10:00pm Massacre River: The Woman Without A Country – Massacre River: The Woman Without a Country is told through the eyes of Pikilina, a Dominican-born woman of Haitian descent. Racial and political violence erupt when the country of her birth, the Dominican Republic reverses its birthright citizenship law and she is left stateless, along with over 250,000 others. This program is not available on-demand at this time.

Monday September 23 at 8:00pm Antiques Roadshow: Celebrating Latino Heritage – Discover amazing items with connections to Latin American history and culture, including a treasure with an updated appraisal of as much as $2.2 million, now the highest-valued items in the entire “Roadshow” archive. Antiques Roadshow is available on-demand through our website and on the PBS Video app.

Friday September 25 at 10:00pm Independent Lens: Dolores – Meet the indomitable Dolores Huerta, who tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Cesar Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant – and unheralded – feminist activists of the 20th century. Sunday September 27 at 1:00pm Willie Velasquez: Your Vote is Your Voice Meet the charismatic pioneering activist whose rallying cry of “su voto es su voz” (your vote is your voice) started a grassroots movement that transformed the nation’s political landscape and paved the way for the growing power of the Latino vote. Available for on-demand viewing for WITF Passport Members.

Tuesday October 6 at 8:00pm Hispanic Heritage Awards – Celebrate the recipients of the annual Hispanic Heritage Awards. The evening includes performances and appearances by some of the country’s most celebrated Hispanic artists and visionaries. Available on-demand on our website and through the PBS Video app. Last year’s awards ceremony is available for WITF Passport Members.

Tuesday October 6 at 9:00pm Latino Vote: Dispatches from the Battleground – Get an inside look at the high-stakes effort to get out the Latino vote in this year’s election. Political candidates are focused on maximizing turnout and support from Latinos, poised to be the largest non-white voting bloc. Available on-demand on our website and through the PBS Video app.

Sunday October 11 at 1:30pm VOCES on PBS: Children of Giant – In 1955, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean and a massive crew descended on the Texas town of Marfa to begin production on Giant. Now, 60 years later, “Children of Giant” explores the film’s still timely examination of racial prejudice. Available on-demand on our website and through the PBS Video app.
