Penn State research projects combat child abuse
(Harrisburg) — Members of the State House Children and Youth Committee got an update recently on research being done at Penn State University to combat child abuse.
Dr. Jennie Noll, Director of the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network at Penn State, says one of their big research projects focuses on the advance detection of abusive head trauma in children.
“When kids come in to the hospital, about 30-pefcent of head-injured kids are abused but they’re missed because physicians don’t know exactly what to look for and exactly how to make that determination of abuse,” she said.
Noll said about 10 percent of kids whose abusive head trauma goes undetected by a doctor die.
She said another major research project is looking at health disparities in abused and neglected children.
Beginning in January Penn State will also be involved in a first ever comprehensive child sexual abuse prevention trial in Bucks, Cambria, Chester, Somerset and York counties.
