(Chambersburg) — Chambersburg Area School District announced security protocol changes Tuesday for all Trojan Stadium and gymnasium events, effective Friday.

In a letter to parents sent out Tuesday afternoon, Interim Chambersburg Area Senior High School Principal Brad Ocker wrote that the school administration would be taking action to “combat growing concerns within the community regarding school safety.”

Athletic Director Jeremy Flores and CASD police helped establish the protocols with school administration.

These changes come after the Sept. 15 football game was cancelled due to social media rumors that violence would occur during the game. It would have been the first home game of the season.

Another change Ocker addressed in the letter is the peer-to-peer counseling that has been instituted at the school.

“To be more specific, a large portion of this counseling will continue through the efforts of students who participate in our International Baccalaureate program as well as student members from the National Honor Society,” Ocker wrote. “These groups of students are committed to positive mentoring of their peers.”

Ocker wrote that he is confident in the school community can flush out negativity and bring positive change.

Ocker said there has been no major student conflicts. He also again provided the number for the concern hotline for ideas, concerns or questions. 717-261-5662.

Rule changes

Adults entering games at the stadium or in the gymnasium will now be limited to carrying one small clutch bag or purse. Students are already prohibited from bringing bags.

Diaper bags, walkers and other “medically necessary items” will be permitted “following a detailed search,” according to the guidelines released along with Ocker’s statement.

Blankets, additional clothing, cameras and cellphones are allowed but subject to search, according to the release. Seat cushions without pockets, zippers and concealable areas are allowed.

Anyone with a prohibited item will be asked to take it back to their vehicle.

Students younger than eighth-grade must be accompanied by an adult to sporting events.

The guidelines also state that spectators are expected to remain seated unless in line for concessions or restrooms.

CASD spokesperson Tammy Stouffer said Tuesday “All athletic events have and will continue to have security and district administrators present to enforce regulations.”
