(Lancaster) — A long-rumored candidate for a congressional seat in Lancaster County is now saying he’ll instead run for state Senate.

Lancaster County Commissioner Scott Martin says his family is a priority for him, prompting the decision to run for state Senator Lloyd Smucker’s seat.

Smucker has announced plans to launch a campaign for retiring midstate Congressman Joe Pitts’s position.

Pitts, whose district includes parts of Lancaster and Berks counties, says he won’t run for re-election next year.

All the maneuvering avoids what could have been a contentious primary between Smucker and Martin for Pitts’s seat.
