Zoning hearing continues in Fairview Township, more crowds expected
(New Cumberland) — Concerned citizens plan to again gather en masse tonight when the Fairview Township Supervisors continue a public hearing on a conditional use zoning application. Goodman Birtcher North America is eying an 82 acre tract of land, at the junction of I-83 and the Turnpike, to construct a one million square foot warehouse facility.
Regional Director of Development and Acquisition Troy Briggs says the location makes strategic sense. “Because they’re on the Interstate anyway, they can get off the Interstate, not impact any secondary roads, grab their product and get back on the Interstate,” Briggs says. “As you know, time is money for these logistics companies.”
Briggs says the northern York County site could generate up to 400 new jobs, in addition to roughly 600-thousand dollars in annual property tax revenue. But, neighbors are concerned about how additional truck traffic and potential pollution would impact their quality of life.
About 250 people turned out for last month’s hearing, which will re-convene tonight.
Some point to vacant warehouse space that already exists in the region , but Briggs says none of it comes close to the square footage requirements of the Fortune 500 companies Goodman Birtcher hopes to attract with this project.
Tonight’s hearing will be held at the Red Land High School Auditorium in order to accommodate the anticipated crowd.
