State inspectors clear dairy to resume raw milk sales
(Harrisburg) — A Franklin County dairy has been cleared by the state to sell raw milk again. The green light for the Family Cow in Chambersburg comes one week after sales were halted.
A Department of Agriculture spokeswoman says the Family Cow has passed inspection and it can now resume the production and sale of raw milk.
Last week, the commonwealth ordered the owners to stop selling raw milk when samples tested positive for Campylobacter bacteria.
The state Health Department confirms six illnesses tied to the raw milk sold by the Family Cow. That’s up slightly from the five Campylobacter infections reported by the department last week.
It was just last year that the same operation was shut down for 11-days with the same bacteria.
State law allows farms to sell raw — or unpasteurized — milk, but requires them to be permitted and inspected.
