Mayors Against Illegal Guns weigh in on background checks
(Washington, DC) — A group of mayors calling for changes in gun laws has released a studyon the potential impact of universal background checks.
The Mayors Against Illegal Guns report says such checks on all sales wouldn’t be a burden to gun sellers.
The organization’s director, Mark Glaze, says changes are needed since gun stores have become increasingly commonplace in Pennsylvania. “99.97 percent of people who live in the Keystone state live within ten miles of a gun dealer. That’s more than there are post offices. So, if it’s easier to get a background check than it is to buy stamps, and you can save a lot of lives, I think the Senators and House members from Pennsylvania ought to be supporting this reform.”
Glaze says in states that require universal background checks, cases of gun trafficking, suicide, and domestic violence-related deaths have dropped.
Several midstate mayors, including Linda Thompson of Harrisburg, Rick Gray of Lancaster, and Kim Bracey of York, belong to the group.
The National Rifle Association has pushed back on calls for universal background checks.
