Carmody faces the challenge of learning to be a vet in the real-world rather than relying on textbooks when he visits the Crabtree’s Farm. James works to help some new farmers treat their sick herd while Helen rallies the townspeople to help the newcomers alongside waiting for some personal news of her own.
Immerse yourself into the world of animal healthcare by reading a few animal-inspired novels that are enjoyed by vets and animal enthusiasts to this day. A classic and beloved read is Charlotte’s Web (1974) by E.B. White. This little miracle of a novel captures a reader with the iconic opening line “Where’s Papa going with that ax?” along with vibrant and colorful illustrations that inspire the imagination. The 2022 novel Horse by Geraldine Brooks reimagines the story of a history-making racehorse, Lexington, trained by an enslaved man named Jarret. Although he possessed an invaluable expertise, Jarret, like many other Black horsemen, had no civil rights or personal agency. This inspiring story tells of the connection between a young man and his horse and the love and bravery it takes for a person to nurture an animal to triumph.
If you’re drawn more to spectacular graphics, then Love: The Tiger (2015) by Frederic Brremaud and illustrated by Federico Bertolucci will pique your interest. This graphic novel is purely water-colored illustrations with no words on any page. Still, it tells of an aging tiger wandering the jungle for food, but having terrible luck. Although the novel is semi-recent, it illustrates an untouched habitat where animals from around the world roam and interact. Outside of being visually beautiful, the novel’s critical conservation message has had a positive impact on tiger-protection efforts around the globe.
