In Suspects, DI Martha Bellamy, DS Jack Weston and DC Charlie Steele tackle hard-hitting cases ranging from the abduction of a two-year old child to an attempted murder that’s been made to look like assisted suicide. The team also investigates the source of a batch of deadly drugs, the gang-rape of a 13-year-old girl, and the hunt for a serial rapist.
The series is unique because it focuses on the police work, rather than the personal lives of the characters.
The drama’s dialogue is mostly improvised, as well. Before they started filming, the actors spent weeks doing workshops with a retired detective chief inspector to learn interview technique, police terminology, and day-to-day lingo. This improvisation resulted in more natural conversations and reactions on screen.
