(Harrisburg) – The midstate is bracing for its first winter storm of 2021.
Forecasters are anticipating snowfall over central Pennsylvania beginning Sunday and potentially lasting until Monday night.
Several inches are expected to accumulate, as temperatures remain around or below freezing for the next several days.
Craig Evanego, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at State College, says with the storm tracking South, it is too early to estimate how much snow the region may get.
“We’ll continue to see cold weather right on through the weekend. This system being a little bit further South… it tends to want to keep the cold air a little bit deeper over Central Pennsylvania,” he said.
Evanego says the storm will likely be just a snow event, rather than a wintery mix of rain or sleet.
He also expects some blustery wind out of the Northeast Monday as the storm gets spinning up of the East Coast.
“There’s a storm that’s going to be coming up the Ohio Valley and – as often happens this time of year – as it approaches the mid-Atlantic, we’ll see some redevelopment off the Mid Atlantic coast, and that’ll become the primary storm system – the one off the coast,” he explained.
As the storm evolves over the weekend, Evanego recommends people stay-up-to-date on conditions with the National Weather Service or their preferred weather information source.
Travelers should watch for hazardous driving conditions beginning Sunday afternoon.
