Centre County sees another jump in COVID-19 cases, passing 2,000

(University Park) — The number of COVID-19 cases in Centre County grew by 195, the second largest increase in the county since the pandemic began, according to the state Department of Health update on Tuesday.

Centre County has 2,031 known cases of COVID-19 — 1,969 confirmed and 62 probable cases. That’s up from 1,836 on Monday.

Most of the county’s increase is in the State College area 16801 zip code and Penn State’s 16802 zip code.

According to the Department of Health, there are:

  • 1,264 confirmed and 27 probable cases in the State College area’s 16801 zip code, next to Penn State. That’s up 151 cases from 1,113 confirmed and 26 probable on Monday.

  • 270 confirmed cases and 1-4 probable cases in the 16802 zip code, Penn State’s University Park campus. That’s up from 248 confirmed cases and 1-4 probables Monday.

  • 125 confirmed cases and 7 probable cases in the nearby 16803 zip code. That’s up from 112 confirmed and 7 probable cases Monday.

The largest one-day increase in Centre County was a 212-case jump on Sept. 15.

Penn State is also expected to release updated COVID-19 test numbers Tuesday. University leaders have said so far they do not see the need to move to fully remote learning either temporarily or for the rest of the semester.

Penn State saw an increase of 320 cases between Sept. 11 and 17, according to its dashboard Friday.

Statewide, there are a total of 151,646 confirmed and probable cases.
