A legendary, award-winning York County restaurant has suddenly and stunningly closed its doors.

The Accomac in Hellam Township told employees of its restaurant and catering business this week that it is halting operations.

Additionally, many employees are expressing disbelief and frustration that they are not being paid for recent work.

A phone call to the restaurant shortly after it was scheduled to open Tuesday night at 4:30 p.m. went to voicemail, and visits to the property on 6330 River Drive overlooking the Susquehanna River on Tuesday and Wednesday revealed locked doors and no human activity.

There was “no sense” this was coming, said Randi Chambless of Wrightsville, who’s worked as a bartender and server for the catering arm of The Accomac since June.

“They’ve booked out events until December. It looked like we all had work coming up,” she said.

Attempts to reach owners Doug and Charlene Campbell, who said at the beginning of 2018 they were putting the restaurant up for sale at $1.4 million, were unsuccessful. A cell phone number for Charlene that worked earlier this fall now comes with a message that it is no longer in service.
