Aggressive driving enforcement underway in south central Pennsylvania

(Undated) — Motorists, you’re forewarned.

Officers from 18 police departments in Adams, Franklin, Lebanon and York counties will be out through Aug. 26 to crack down on aggressive driving.

The aim is to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries and deaths on roads throughout Pennsylvania, according to a news release from the Center For Traffic Safety.

In particular, police will be focusing on red light running, the Steer Clear Law that requires motorists to move over when they approach an emergency scene or a stopped emergency vehicle, tailgating and speeding. Aggressive drivers who are stopped by police during the enforcement period will be ticketed. 

Motorists who exhibit other unsafe behavior, like driving too fast for conditions and following too closely, will be cited during the enforcement.

Police departments in Adams County that are participating include Cumberland Township and Eastern Adams Regional.

In Franklin County, Washington Township Police Department is participating.

In Lebanon County, participating departments include Lebanon City, North Cornwall Township, North Lebanon Township and South Londonderry Township.

And in York County, participating departments include Carroll Township, Fairview Township, Hanover Borough, Hellam Township, Lower Windsor Township, Northern York County Regional, Spring Garden Township, Springettsbury Township, West Manchester Township, York Area Regional and York City.

Altogether, more than 200 police departments across the state will be participating in the enforcement detail through Aug. 26, so motorists should take caution wherever they travel.

Police cited more than 4,100 people during a similar enforcement done in March and April.

Throughout 2017, police departments around the state that participated in the enforcement wrote 41,661 citations, including 27,017 for speeding, according to the news release from the Center For Traffic Safety.

During an unrelated DUI detail recently, West Manchester Township Police Department with assistance from other departments in York County arrested eight people for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and four people for drug possession, and issued eight traffic citations, according to a news release from the department.

The DUI checkpoint was held in the 1100 block of Roosevelt Avenue from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. beginning July 6.
