3rd grade teacher charged with sexual assault at East Hanover school

James Mentzer, 39, of Hummelstown, was charged today for having inappropriate contact with five girls at East Hanover Elementary School, where he taught third grade.

He is charged with institutional sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault and five counts of corruption of minors.

The school administration contacted Pennsylvania State Police in Harrisburg the morning of Feb. 16 to report suspected abuse. A months-long investigation revealed he had inappropriate contact with five girls ranging in age from 8 to 11. The reported abuse began in August 2017 at the school.

Mentzer is awaiting arraignment at the Dauphin County Judicial Center.
