2018 Central PA Spelling Bee Champion Surabi Shanmugam

(Harrisburg) — The winner of the 2018 Central PA Spelling Bee is heading to the big show.

Surabi Shanmugam, a 7th grader at Eagle View Middle School in the Cumberland Valley School District, will be among a record 516 spellers competing in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The 11 year old leaves today by limosine for National Harbor just outside Washington, D.C.

Back in February, Surabi survived 21-rounds at the Central PA bee, held at WITF.

She was crowed champion after correctly spelling the winning word,.. abseil.

Surabi was asked how she would prepare for the National Bee:

“Probably just use the same studying technique I used, just a bit harder.  I’ve heard that it’s like really hard when you get there,” she said.

Spelling starts on Tuesday.

Good Luck Surabi !
