Trespasser with gun forced Shrewsbury Elementary into ‘full lockdown’ on Monday

(Undated) — An individual spotted carrying a gun Monday afternoon on the campus at Shrewsbury Elementary triggered a quick response from police and forced the school into a full lockdown, according to police and the school district.
“The building was put into full lockdown as a safety precaution, and the person was taken into custody,” an email from Southern York County School District states. “It is believed that the person was hunting squirrels and the weapon was an air rifle.”
About 1:30 p.m., Southern Regional Police were sent to the school, located at 331 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, after a staff member at the school spotted the person, according to Supt. Sandy Lemmon.
When asked about the response from police, the students and staff during the incident, Lemmon said, “We couldn’t be more proud of all three.”
Lemmon said that the school is on lockdown at all times, meaning that access to it is only allowed to authorized people, but that “full lockdown” means that students were sequestered in rooms that were then locked.
“Our students were outstanding,” she said. “This is exactly why we practice drills throughout the school year … safety is the number-one priority.”
Lemmon said she believed the school was locked-down for about a half-hour before police gave her the all-clear.
