Monitoring a river under siege
(Harrisburg) — A new website highlights the stresses on water quality within the East Coast’s longest river.
The interactive, multimedia website called the Susquehanna River Story is up and running and it features a wealth of information on water quality in the river and its tributaries.
The site uses GIS maps, videos, charts and pictures to show where mining, agriculture, stormwater and dams have impacted the Susquehanna River basin.
The Department of Environmental Protection’s Deborah Klenotic says cleaning it up is a work in progress.
“Although the health of the Susquehanna is improving, there is still a long way to go. All of our activities affect the water quality in rivers the state,” she said.
Water samplers and computerized monitoring devices are providing continuous data on river and stream aquatic quality.
