Harley-Davidson to cut 118 jobs in York County

(York) — Harley-Davidson is eliminating 118 jobs at its facility in Springettsbury Township as the company shifts all production of its cruiser motorcycles to its plant in Kansas City.

The layoffs affect 110 hourly workers who are members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The remainder are salaried workers and contractors, said Bernadette Lauer, a Harley-Davidson spokeswoman.

The layoffs will begin June 23 and continue through the end of July. The 118 positions will be added to Harley-Davidson’s workforce in Kansas City. Affected workers will have the opportunity to apply for jobs in Kansas City.

Harley-Davidson employees were notified back in November 2015 that the company planned to consolidate production of its Softail cruiser motorcycles at its Kansas City plant starting with the 2018 model year, Lauer said.

The Springfield Township plant produces five Softail models while the Kansas City plant produces two models, Lauer said.Harley-Davidson will continue to produce touring motorcycles and Trike motorcycles in Springettsbury Township.

After the layoffs, the company will have about 800 workers in Springettsbury Township, Lauer said. As late as 2009, the facility had employed about 2,000 hourly workers.
