Three Pa. universities take part in first-of-its-kind Alzheimer’s study

(Undated) — Three Pennsylvania universities are joining a first-of-its-kind national study that hopes to stop Alzheimer’s Disease before it starts.
The University of Pittsburgh along with Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia are participating in the A4 Study, which will test whether a new treatment that blocks the build up of a certain protein in the brain can slow memory loss caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
“I believe that the A4 study really has the potential to fundamentally change the way we think about Alzheimer’s Disease to becoming a preventable illness, ” says Dr. Reisa Sperling, the national project leader for the study.
Sperling says they are still looking for participants ages 65 to 85 who are not yet showing any symptoms of Alzheimers to join the study.
