Harrisburg’s Mulberry St. bridge remains closed

(Harrisburg) — The American Red Cross is assisting 10 people who were displaced from their apartments by the collapse of a concrete retaining wall supporting a surface parking lot in Harrisburg.
PennDOT says the Mulberry Street Bridge will remain closed to all traffic until further notice.
“We had a bridge inspector on the scene for an initial assessment,” said Mike Keiser, PennDOT’s district executive for south central Pennsylvania. “We will have an inspection team back at the bridge on (this) morning to make a more thorough evaluation. We want to make sure that the ground is stable and able to provide the necessary lateral support to the roadway approach to the bridge. A decision to reopen the bridge will be based on that evaluation.”
The ground supporting the wall adjacent to the bridge gave way yesterday afternoon.
A car that was in the parking lot crashed through the roof of a tire warehouse.
No one was in the car at the time.
The tire warehouse and an adjoining motorcycle shop also were empty.
Firefighters were training near the bridge at the time and saw the car cascade down.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
