(Harrisburg) — It’s an ongoing struggle to keep waterways and surrounding areas in Pennsylvania free of trash and 2015 was no exception.

Volunteers from 44 Pennsylvania counties were among those taking part in the 2015 International Coastal Cleanup.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful was the statewide organizer, and they collected an estimated one million pounds of trash, according to Program Coordinator Michelle Dunn.

“We’ve been pretty much steadily increasing since 2007.  In 2007 we had just under 20,000 pounds collected, so we’ve been growing the program since we took over in 2007 with the partnership with the Ocean Conservancy,” she said.

Food containers, glass and plastic bottles and cigarette butts accounted for the majority of items collected during the cleanup.
