Smart Talk: York’s Dr. Wanda Filer leads family physician group
What to look for on Smart Talk Thursday, October 22, 2015:
According to the National Institutes of Health the family physician is the physician generalist who takes professional responsibility for the comprehensive care of unselected patients with undifferentiated problems and who is committed to the person regardless of age, gender, illness, or organ system. The clinical specialty of family practice is patient centered, evidence based, family focused, and problem oriented.
If it sounds broad, it is.
The family physician has always played a large role in their patients’ health. But in today’s patient-centered, medical team concept, the family physician may be even more important.
The family physician is usually the first medical professional to see a patient. Today, family physicians are seeing more patients all the time as more are insured under the Affordable Care Act and the population is getting older.
One of the largest organizations representing the interest of and advocating for family physicians is the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Wanda Filer of York is the new president of AAFP. She appears on Thursday’s Smart Talk.
