Bucknell to host “solidarity ceremony” after racist radio broadcast

(Lewisburg) — Some students at Bucknell University are trying to turn an ugly incident into a chance to discuss race and diversity, as a so-called solidarity ceremony is slated to take place on the topic.

Students are running tonight’s event, with support from some faculty members and administrators at the Union County university.

Alexandra Rosen, president of the student government group, says attendees will hear from those who come from many different backgrounds, including African American, Latin American, Caribbean American, and Middle Eastern.

“So we picked a very, very brave group of people and how different aspects of their lives at Bucknell have been questioned by certain prejudices on campus,” says Rosen.

The event comes after a racist broadcast on the campus radio station that ended with three students expelled.

“By us taking a step forward and recognizing that this is an issue and by educating our students, I think especially from students to students, which is even more powerful, then that’s something that’s even more valuable than a degree,” she adds.

Students will be able to share their thoughts in small groups, and will recite a solidarity creed that is based on one from Ole Miss University.

Rosen says the event is a recognition that everyone shares some responsibility in creating an environment where discrimination isn’t tolerated.
