(Steelton) —Steelton Borough Water Authority in Dauphin County will pay $55,000 to resolve drinking water treatment issues and reporting violations.

The Department of Environmental Protection brought the action after finding inadequate disinfection procedures for one organism capable of causing disease in November.

Steelton also failed to report water turbidity levels for 108 days in 2013, and a former operator also lied about past readings.

Steelton will immediately create a new system for detecting the bacteria, and update documentation, as well as revise its operation plan.

The DEP says it has been inspecting Steelton’s plant each week since the violations, and believes there’s no current risk.
