Gamut Theatre Gets New Home

After 20 years in its location on the third floor of Strawberry Square in Harrisburg, Gamut Theatre is moving to a new location which is literally just down the block.

The former First Church of God at 15 N. Fourth Street in downtown Harrisburg has already been purchased by the theatre company. A fundraising campaign is underway to raise the money needed to transform the 1855 church into a theatrical facility which can house Gamut’s main stage productions, Harrisburg Shakespeare Company, Popcorn Hat Players children’s theatre and touring productions. With $500,000 already raised, Gamut needs to raise another $500,000 in order to get the financing to start major construction on March 1.

A number of others in the arts community have expressed satisfaction that Gamut will be not be leaving Harrisburg, and they considered at one point, but instead will remain to help enrich the city’s theatre scene. At a recent Town Hall meeting held by Gamut in the new location, Harrisburg City Mayor Eric Papenfuse attended and pledged that Gamut would have a partner in the city for the first time.

The goal is for major construction to be completed by July, after which a number of volunteers will be needed to help paint and put the finishing touches on the new facility. Gamut hopes to present its first production at the new location in November of 2014, but the timing is contingent upon reaching its fundraising goals.
