PA Women’s Health Caucus unveils legislation

(Harrisburg) — The General Assembly’s bipartisan, bicameral Women’s Health Caucus is backing a package of seven bills dubbed the Pennsylvania Agenda for Women’s Health.

One of the measures would require employers to provide a private, sanitary space for nursing mothers to pump milk.

Representative Mary Jo Daley recognizes a similar law exists on the federal level. But the Montgomery County Democrat says it does not apply to salaried — or management — employees.

“My legislation remedies that by treating everyone equally under the law,” she explains.

“There’s no rational reason that a nursing mother who works in a salaried position should be discriminated against in this manner.”

Supporters say the package of legislation ensures women have equal treatment, access and opportunity.

Another measure would create 15-foot buffer zones around entrances health care facilities to ensure women can access medical services.

Its prime sponsor says the bill is designed to balance women’s rights with the rights of would-be protesters and demonstrators.
