Penn State Hershey recognized for high-level stroke care
(Hershey) — A midstate hospital has been certified as a Disease-Specific Care Comprehensive Stroke Center.
The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Stroke Center has received the highest level of certification awarded by the Joint Commission and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
Stroke Center Manager Kathy Morrison says the certification recognizes the advanced level of care her unit is able to provide.
“As those patients are in those primary stroke centers and they may qualify for an advanced level of care, there’s that rapid identification and transfer process so those patients can get to that comprehensive center,” she explains.
Morrison says to call 911 at the first sign of a stroke, because time is of the essence and research has proven that patients receive much faster entry into the health care process if they arrive at the hospital by ambulance.
Penn State Hershey is one of 57 stroke centers in the nation with the certification, and the only midstate facility on the list.
