Adams County fruit belt readies for apple season

(Biglerville) — Harvest season will soon be in full swing, and the midstate’s apple crop is looking good so far this fall.
Apple growers want to have everything picked by the season’s first hard frost, which typically means late October in this part of the state.
Kay Hollabaugh, of Hollabaugh Brothers in Biglerville, Adams County, says Mother Nature has been especially cooperative this growing season.
“Our crop is clean. We didn’t have any hail,” she explains. “Typically we get the repercussions of coastal storms and some of the hurricanes that come out of the South and there have been almost no named hurricanes this year.”

Pennsylvania was one of only a few states to get an apple crop to harvest last year, but Hollabaugh says that’s not the case this season.
She says the state’s apple growers will have to do a good job marketing the fruit.
Adams County leads the state in apple production, and Pennsylvania ranks fourth nationwide.
The 49th National Apple Harvest Festival will be held in Arendtsville during the first two weekends in October.
