Millersville president says guns banned from most parts of campus
(Harrisburg) — Some state-owned universities have changed their policies regarding firearms on campus, but the president of a midstate school says weapons are still banned from most gatherings and buildings.
Millersville University President John Anderson says guns are not allowed inside buildings or sports venues on the Lancaster County campus.
Speaking on witf‘s Radio Smart Talk, he says there are places where firearms are allowed.
“We have a number of public streets that go through our campus, and in adhering to commonwealth policy of public land and the right to carry firearms, our policy reflects that as congruent with the commonwealth policy,” Anderson says.
He says he would support an outright ban on firearms on campus, even though State System of Higher Education lawyers previously have concluded such a ban would be unenforcable.
A panel of law-enforcement experts is examining what can be done to make the 14 state-owned universities, including Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and Kutztown, safer.
The task force is considering whether students should be allowed to carry firearms on campus if they have permits.
