Historical marker to commemorate Scotland School
(Chambersburg) — A state historical marker commemorating the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children is slated to be unveiled this afternoon in Franklin County.
The text of the blue and gold marker is being kept under wraps until the 2pm dedication — but president of the Scotland School Alumni Association, Jim Lowe, says it will represent the alumni in perpetuity.
He says the school provided him with more than an education.
“It’s just not like any other school,” Lowe explains. “We were raised there. We were brothers and sisters and we grew up together. Instead of a house we shared a whole school together, so you had 200 brothers and 200 sisters.”
Established as an orphanage for the children of Civil War veterans in 1895, the Scotland School was in operation for 114 years.
Its 2009 closure saved the state 10-and-a-half million dollars. At the time, the Rendell administration said it was not a core function of government.
