Dauphin County library offers e-reader assistance

(Harrisburg) — The Dauphin County Library System’s collection of e-books is growing along with demand. But many first-time users have questions, and the system is helping patrons get comfortable with their new, high-tech devices.

The e-books available are compatible with virtually any device — like an iPad or a Kindle. But east shore area library administrator Marjorie McKensie recognizes getting started can be a daunting task.

“Particularly people who are new to using e-readers have difficulty sometimes, going through all the steps needed to get their device set up, and to learn how to download e-books through our website,” McKensie says.

The county library system offers a variety of best sellers, but — just like their hard copy counterparts — these digital copies are limited and often have to be placed on hold. There’s never a wait for most older e-book titles though.

Visitors can have their e-book questions answered at a special program tonight, or chat with one of the volunteers who regularly assist people with their e-readers one-on-one. Registration for tonight’s program is available online.
