AAA: Fewer Pennsylvanians traveling this weekend
(Philadelphia) — Fewer people in the region are expected to travel for the Memorial Day weekend this year than last.
AAA Mid-Atlantic is reporting 1.3 million Pennsylvanians will take trips over the long weekend, a roughly 1 percent decline from last year.
Spokeswoman Jenny Robinson says travelers surveyed have a diverse selection of destinations.
“Ten percent of Pennsylvanians we surveyed say they’re going to Ocean City, Maryland,” Robinson explains. “Another 9 percent say they’ll visit the Delaware beaches, another 7 percent say they’ll visit a different Jersey shore town, but also 7 percent say they’ll visit the Carolinas, and 5 percent of people in our survey from Pennsylvania say they’re going to visit Florida.”
Robinson says of the roughly 35 million people expected to take trips nationwide, 90 percent will travel by car.
That’s about a 1 percent decline from last year.
The auto club’s data show gas prices in the midstate are averaging $3.46 for a gallon of regular.
That’s about eight cents cheaper than this time last year.
