Art in the Twenty-First Century, or Art21, features contemporary visual art and artists from around the world. Intimate footage lets the viewer see the artists at work and observe their process as they turn inspiration into art.
In Everyday Icons, we’ll watch as four artists do their part to correct centuries-long exclusions and misrepresentations and show us a different path forward – one that creates a more complete picture of our world.
The episode features painter Amy Sherald – who painted Michelle Obama’s portrait, Philadelphia video artist Alex Da Corte, New Mexico sculptor Rose B. Simpson and Puerto Rican sculptor Daniel Lind-Ramos.
In their practices, the rigid boundaries of expectation are pushed aside in favor of new and playful approaches and ideas. They remix and reimagine art histories, archetypes, monuments, pop culture and genres to help us see something new in the everyday.
