Science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM often include an A for Arts today. A new production that will premiere in Lititz next month is a good example.

The production is called LOVEBUG and it depicts nine different types of insects through professional dance, poetry and elaborate costumes.

With us on The Spark Tuesday was Lauren Tait, the creator and director of Love Bug,”It depicts nine different types of bugs through dance and costumes and sets. We have a giant suspended cocoon and we have a big spider web. The company is an adult company. The show is geared towards young audiences, but hopefully sophisticated enough for adults to want to watch without their kids as well.

Tait was asked where the idea for the show came from,”This was the result of a passing comment that I heard someone talking about a giant hive. And I thought, Wow. Well, that’s an interesting image. And so for me, really, it was about the otherworldliness and the weirdness and the beauty of bugs, their compound eyes and delicate wings and iridescent exoskeletons. And they’re just so interesting. And I thought and the way they move, layering that on. And so it was just kind of a something I had to try to do.”

Keith Williams, Vice President of Engagement and Education at the Lancaster Conservancy explained the Conservancy’s role.”this is an amazing opportunity for us to do some great education about biodiversity conservation. You know, we protect land for our community use forever. And one of the reasons why we protect that land is we’re losing biodiversity at a frightening pace even here locally. And in one of those groups of organisms that we’re losing are insects. And, you know, the fact that that Lauren had this idea of love bug because bugs need love. It was a no brainer for us to get involved.”

Actor Caleb Heckman also appeared on the program.
