The Indian Doctor: Streaming Now on WITF Passport

  • Christina Zeiders

The Indian Doctor is a comedy-drama set in the 1960s following a high-flying Delhi graduate Dr. Prem Sharma and his wife Kamini’s new life in a Welsh coal-mining town. They move to the village following the death of the community doctor.

It’s quite the culture shock as the couple trades in a rather glamorous lifestyle in London for the sleepy Welsh village, a fact that the regal Kamini does not let her husband forget.

Season one’s storyline revolves around the seemingly friendly colliery manager Richard Sharpe and the dark secret that he’s deliberately ignored safety warnings to further his own career. Evidence exists in the previous doctor’s diaries and Prem is determined to reveal the truth.

In season two, Prem faces evangelical preacher Herbert Todd. When an outbreak of smallpox threatens to devastate the village, Prem finds himself fighting prejudice and incompetence while he tries to win the hearts, minds, and trust of the villagers over the bull-headed Todd. Plus, Prem nervously awaits the arrival of his dreaded mother-in-law Pushpa.

Season three, set three years after Sharma’s arrival, finds the couple very much a part of the community. But their lives – and everyone else’s in the village – are about to change when the wild sons of the mine’s owner return to bring a real taste of the swinging ‘60s.
