(Harrisburg) — Midstate transportation agencies are asking the public to share their experiences driving on Interstate 81.
About 100,000 vehicles travel I-81 in the Harrisburg area every day.
The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) is one of the organizations looking to get a better feel for people’s experiences on the road, including concerns about safety and congestion.
“We have a lot of data along those lines but it’s always helpful to hear from those who are regularly on the road so that we make sure that our analysis is accurate,” said Executive Director Steve Deck.
He added they are looking for the sections of I-81 that have the greatest need.
“It’s a complicated thing to really understand the road and where it makes the most sense to spend the dollars that you have first,” Deck said.
The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program will make nearly $11.8 billion available over four years for highway and bridge improvements across the commonwealth.
People can submit their comments at www.i81southcentralpa.com.
The planning process is being driven by Franklin County, Lebanon County, and TCRPC, which includes Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties. They are working in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration.
Transportation agencies will study the data through next summer, then spend the rest of the year creating a plan.
