(Harrisburg) — Another family-owned midstate supermarket is selling its stores to a large chain.
Musser’s Markets has been in operation in Lancaster County for 94 years, but that will end in October, when the Musser family expects to finalize the sale of its three locations to Giant Food Stores.
In a statement, the family said they decided to sell its stores in Columbia, Quarryville, and Lebanon because of changes in the industry, the loss of a cooperative wholesaler, customer buying habits, and competition both in the area and online.
Musser’s is the third family-owned supermarket in Lancaster County to sell to Giant in the last year, following Darrenkamp’s and Ferguson & Hassler.
Musser’s Market last day of business will be on October 17, 2019.
After the sale, the stores will close for about a week to complete a remodel of the stores.
All Musser’s Markets associates will have the opportunity to interview with Giant.
Carlisle, Cumberland County-based Giant has 158 stores in Pennsylvania employing nearly 29,000 people.
