A winter storm warning is in effect for central Pennsylvania until 6 a.m. Thursday as a storm moves across the commonwealth.
The National Weather Service in State College is forecasting a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Snow will be heavy at times–falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour–decreasing visibility and making travel difficult this afternoon.
Total accumulation will be between 4 and 8 inches, with the highest amounts expected near Chambersburg and Carlisle.
Snow will transition into sleet and freezing rain this afternoon and continue overnight.
The storm is expected to leave the region Thursday morning.
Dozens of schools closed because of the forecast.
Drivers are urged to use caution when navigating the roads. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike announced a 45mph speed limit and restricted vehicles on major roadways, including interstates 81 and 83. Check 511PA.com for the latest travel information.
