News Series: Mariner East 2 pipeline
StateImpact Pennsylvania timed a series of stories pegged to the expected opening of the controversial Mariner East 2 pipeline. The series included text stories, videos, maps and an interactive.
For the three radio features, we focused on questions we heard from residents, including: How would first responders deal with an explosion? And why are they even allowed to build these things near my house? The series also explored the science of why we’re so afraid of pipelines in the first place.
A reader who hadn’t seen the public-service series asked: If the pipeline company doesn’t know what to do if there’s an emergency, how are residents supposed to know? We sent him our series. He thanked us and said, “The story about responder training was reassuring.”
