Bitter cold to follow snow this week

(Harrisburg) — A mass of arctic air is heading for the midstate this week, with wind chills expected to hover around or below zero.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in State College said they expect snow to start falling Tuesday morning and last through the day. Accumulations could be between 2 and 6 inches, with higher totals expected in more northern counties.

Meteorologist John Banghoff said once the system moves out of the region, bitter cold air will move in.

“High temperatures on Wednesday, Thursday are going to be in the teens to single digits with wind chills between Wednesday morning and Friday morning staying near or even below zero,” Banghoff said.

He added such conditions raise the risk of cold-related injuries.

“As you get wind chills that push 5, 10, 15 degrees below zero, within 15 or 20 minutes it’s possible to get frostbite,” Banghoff said. “In addition, hypothermia if you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time.”

He encouraged limiting time outdoors during the cold snap.

Winds are expected to die down by Friday afternoon. Temperatures should rise through the weekend to reach the mid-40s on Sunday.
