(State College) — The official start of winter is more than a month away, but the midstate is likely to get an early dose of snow, beginning today.

Aaron Tyburski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College, says snow showers are expected to begin at about sunrise near the Mason-Dixon line and move slowly north across the commonwealth.

“By late morning towards noon, the entire state will see light snow, becoming a little bit heavier in intensity as we move through the afternoon,” he said. “At that point, we’ll see some warmer air move in alot and what that will do is help change things over to maybe some freezing rain, a little bit of sleet mixing in with the snow and for some areas, even a little bit of rain.”

When it’s all said and done by tomorrow morning, the region should see about three to six inches of snow.

Some schools across central Pennsylvania have already closed for the day.

Tyburski says temperatures are currently about 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year.

“Typically, we would see temperatures into the mid and upper 40s across southern PA and in the upper 30s to low 40s across northern PA this time of year,” he said.

A winter storm warning will go into effect from 8:00 a.m. today until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for much of the midstate.

In Berks County, a winter weather advisory goes into effect at 10 this morning until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow.
