Local and state officials announced on Monday that a $6 million grant will go toward building a 240,000-square-foot complex in downtown York that’s set to contain robotic development, design workshops and office and lab space.

The complex will be built in several phases. It’s expected to cost $64 million in total.

“We declare that this will be the center of our growth into the 21st century economy,” York Mayor Michael Helfrich said at a news conference.  “This is the place we bring together all of the components needed to become one of the smartest places on earth. And this is the date we begin our climb back into the global leadership position that York was known for in the last century.”

The complex will be built on a site that’s a little more than 3 acres. It’s the last remaining undeveloped parcel of the Northwest Triangle, which now includes PeoplesBank Park, Warehaus, York Academy and the redeveloped Keystone Color Works Building.

“This is a 20-, 30-year vision for the City of York,” said Philip Given, Helfrich’s chief of staff. “And this is the last piece of the puzzle for it.”
