PA helps lead the charge for self-driving cars

(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania is among the states leading the nation in the development of autonomous vehicle technology.
With one of only 10 proving grounds for self-driving vehicle technology in State College and with Uber and other companies testing their autonomous vehicles in Pennsylvania, PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards says PA is one of a handful of states taking the lead in development of the technology.
Richards says Pennsylvania is also part of the Smart Belt Coalition.
“We’re working together with Ohio and Michigan. This will be the first multi-state autonomous-connected vehicle corridor. We’re very proud of it. All three states have really taken the lead and other states are watching,” she said.
Richards hopes self-driving vehicles can help to reduce the 94 percent rate of fatal accidents caused by human distraction.
