A+ to F: Here’s how the NRA rates your legislators

(Undated) — With the one anomaly of Democratic Sen. Bob Casey carrying an NRA rating higher than his Republican counterpart, Sen. Pat Toomey, a D (for Democrat) behind an incumbent’s name appears to translate into an F rating from the NRA.

The NRA website says the ratings are nonpartisan and based on legislators’ records on the sole issue of gun rights and unquestioning support of the 2nd Amendment.

But, across the board, Pennsylvania’s Democratic legislators — from U.S. Congress down to the state House, all received F ratings on the NRA’s Political Victory Fund list.

NRA support of some politicians, and vice versa, has been a topic of discussion during the student protests following the mass murder of students and staff at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. 

The NRA rates politicians and political candidates from A+ for someone who unconditionally supports all NRA issues to F for a “true enemy of gun owners’ rights.”

Here are the NRA ratings of Pennsylvania’s incumbent politicians.

Note that recently elected Democratic state Rep. Carol Hill-Evans received no rating from the NRA. According to the NRA, that results when a candidate “Refused to answer the NRA-PVF Candidate Questionnaire, often an indication of indifference, if not outright hostility, to gun owners’ and sportsmen’s rights.”

Hill-Evans’ spokesman Bronley Martin said Monday that the representative, who took office in January 2017, does not recall being contacted by the NRA about its survey but that she would be happy to respond to it.
