Family Guide Day 1: Coping With Loss

This page is part of a series. Read more about the Watch Together Family Guide.

Episodes airing February 26:

Daniel’s Goldfish Dies
When Daniel’s pet fish dies, he begins to ask questions about what happened to help him understand what death means, and how to handle the emotions that often come with losing someone you love.
Daniel’s Strawberry Seeds
Daniel and Katerina go to the Enchanted Garden to pick strawberries, only to find that the strawberry plants are dead. They ask questions to help them understand what’s happened and learn what it means when something dies. Strategy: Ask questions about what happened, it might help.
Ideas:
Death is an extremely difficult concept for all of us to deal with and we often feel nervous about talking about these issues with children. Consider:

  1. Children can only understand death if they understand life. Get a plant or a fish that they can help care for. Caring for something that needs you is incredibly valuable for children. Talk about how to care for the plant or pet and help as age-appropriate.
  2. If children have experienced loss of someone close to them or a pet, consider making a special remembrance. Print a photo and place in a frame that children can paint and decorate and make their own.
  3. Ask if children have questions about this episode as you watch together.
  4. If children have experienced loss, check out community agencies like Olivia’s House in York who can help.
