Skeletal remains belong to missing Shippensburg man, coroner says

MECHANICSBURG – The skeletal remains found earlier this month in Shippensburg Township belong to a Shippensburg man missing since last spring.
Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall said the remains found in a wooded area in the 200 block of South Conestoga Drive on Jan. 21 are those of Scott Shaffer, 49, who was reported missing on May 14.
Dental records were used to identify the remains, Hall said in a news release.

No foul play is suspected, the coroner said.
According to a flyer put together by Shaffer’s family at the time of his disappearance, he had last been seen on Diller Road. The flyer also said he had been ill.
The coroner previously said the remains had been at the location they were found in for about a year.
The coroner’s office was assisted in the recovery of the remains by a forensic anthropology team from Mercyhurst University.
Pennsylvania State Police, Carlisle, continue to investigate the case.
