Casey: GOP tax plan a ‘giveaway to the rich’

(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania’s senior U.S. Senator doesn’t see much hope for the middle class in a tax plan supported by Republicans.
Democratic Senator Bob Casey and other members of the Senate Finance Committee met with President Trump in the White House Wednesday to discuss a proposal to cut taxes.
Casey gave Trump a letter from a 73-year old Adams County constituent on a fixed income. The senator said he shares the man’s concerns.
“And I used these words to the president, I said ‘the proposal in its current form is a giveaway to the rich,’” Casey told reporters on a conference call followng the meeting.
An analysis of the plan from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center shows half of savings will go to the top one percent of earners. Some middle-income Americans could even see their tax bill rise.
Casey said the proposal doesn’t match up with Trump’s promises to cut taxes for the middle class.
“There’s really no connection between the rhetoric of wanting to give a middle class tax cut and the proposal,” he said.
Trump reportedly told Casey he is open to changes.
But, with strong support from Republican leaders in the House and Senate, Casey said he doesn’t believe the resulting bill will be much different than the current proposal.
