Game Commission active over latest CWD find

(Harrisburg) — The Pennsylvania Game Commission is stepping up it’s response to this month’s discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease in a wild deer in west-central PA.
The fatal disease was found in a wild deer in an area of Clearfield County where only captive deer had tested positive in the past.
As a result, the Game Commission has created a Chronic Wasting Disease Response Unit and has appointed Wayne LaRoche, Director of the Bureau of Wildlife Management, to head the unit.
LaRoche says the CWD situation has already been his focus.
“To put me into a position to do it full time is really what needs to be done,.. and we’re planning strategy and tactics that we hope might help us actrually control the disease,” he said.
LaRoche says the Game Commission’s response also involves issuing additional deer licenses this fall in the area where the diseased deer was found.
