Earlier this week, an advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration recommended a treatment that uses genetically engineered cells from a patient’s immune system to attack their cancer.
The treatment was first used as a last resort on Emily Whitehead, a six-year-old Centre County girl suffering from leukemia in 2012.
Emily’s father Tom appeared on Smart Talk two years ago to tell Emily’s story and in what was considered a miracle treatment. Emily’s story is in the second segment of the program.
